Assumptions: Pavers per sq ft use the paver's nominal size (joints included); the count is rounded up after the extra %. Base = crushed stone paver base at 1.4 tons per yd³, with 20% added so it still reaches full depth after compacting. Bedding sand = coarse concrete sand; a 50 lb bag is about 0.5 ft³. Edging comes in 8 ft lengths with about 1 spike per foot. Estimates for planning only; confirm with your supplier.

Paver calculator FAQ

How many pavers per square foot?

Divide 144 by the paver's width × length in inches. 4 × 8 in pavers: 4.5 per sq ft. 6 × 6: 4. 6 × 9: about 2.67. 12 × 12: 1. 16 × 16: about 0.56. 24 × 24: 0.25.

How many pavers for a 12 × 16 patio?

A 12 × 16 ft patio is 192 sq ft. With 4 × 8 in pavers that's 864 pavers, or 951 with 10% extra for cuts. It also takes about 6 tons of base gravel at 6 in deep and 32 bags of bedding sand.

How thick should the base be under pavers?

For patios and walkways, 4–6 in of compacted crushed stone. For driveways, 8–12 in. Add more on clay or poorly drained soil, and compact it in 2–3 in layers.

How much sand goes under pavers?

A 1 in bedding layer of coarse concrete sand, screeded flat. That's about 8.3 ft³ per 100 sq ft, or 17 bags of 50 lb sand. Thicker sand lets pavers shift and sink.

How many extra pavers should I buy?

About 10% for straight or running-bond layouts and 15% for herringbone, diagonal layouts or curved edges. Keep a few spares for future repairs.
